The craving for a baby boy: How to get a child of prefered gender: the hottest trend PGD

The crave for a baby or male heir is not new in India. In a patriarchal society almost every parent want to leave their family property to their male heir. Some even adopt a baby boy even though they have a girl child. The govt of India is providing all kinds of support to the those parents who have single girl child. But while the rural India is getting themselves educated and  the urban India, and those who can shell out their disposable income are slowly heading to the new age gender selection process, and more open minded.

So, abortions, recurrent pregnancies and MTPs and bribing Medical practitioners for getting an USG done to detect the gender etc. are all passe. Now comes the latest version of  Gender detection or gender selection process. This is Preimplementation Genetic Diagnosis or PGD to put simply.

PGD is the simple and costly (cost effective!!!)solution to the question how can I determine the gender of my child. I am saying it cost effective because though it costs a bomb for a prospective couple it saves them from undesired abortion and hence the health of the mother. India's ace badminton player Saina Nehwal confesses that her granny did not show up to bless the newborn till the would be player grows to be an one month old!! I remeber my mom always complaining that my dad never wanted the third girl in the family, though he is now over-dotting to his brilliant daughter.

What is PGD? How it is implemented to get the desired result?

The Preimplementation Genetic Diagnosis method, is the technology used is conception through  Invitro-fertilisation. An early stage gentic investigation is done to determine the sex of the embrios which are produced through IVF technology. This  investigation made by the specialists helps to find out the gender of the embriyos.

The process of PGD is apparently simple and effective. Because the egg-cells are fertilised by the sperm outside the human body only through IVF. And after the embryos are created they are cultured in a laboratory for three days. When the cells are developed and multiplied into eight egg cells they are put under a powerful microscope. This microscope investigation detects the gender of the cells. And than the embryos of the desired gender are planted in the womb.
So the luck factor is completely dismissed by this process.

In India the process of PGD is not available, because Indian law does not permit to   detect gender of the foetus. The PGD is available in Thailand, because gender detection is not a punishable crime there. Couples across the world fly to Bangkok to get PGD done so that they can balance their family with a boy or a girl. But Indian couple according to sources prefer only for boy. And statistics show that every third couple visiting Bangkok for a PGD is an India wishing a baby boy. Along with being the hottest fun travel destination Bangkok and Thailand are becoming the new holiday destinations for married couple expecting baby boys. Holiday of one week is enough to get the PGD process done. So the time involves in PGD is suitable enough for a holidaying couple.

The cost of PGD: The Preimplementation Genetic Diagnosis costs around $9,000. And that too excluding the flight fares to and from Bangkok. But Indian couples seem to be indifferent to the cost. And why should they. this will allow them an insurance for life in the form of a male heir...

  1. Being infertile can cause a lot of pain for couples who desperately want to have children. There are options for these couples, if they want to pursue them, but sometimes the costs may outweigh the benefits.
